I originally reached out to Alison for help thinking through my next career move—moving from graduate school into the professional world as a late 30-something. What I’ve ended up working with her on over the past year has been so much more. Her guidance and insightful prompts have allowed me to clarify my priorities and better understand the roadblocks I often don’t see. Alison has positively impacted how I see myself and my self-worth, as well as my ability to tackle whatever challenges or opportunities come next. She is thoughtful and encouraging and a joy to work with.

What is Coaching?
If you could wake up tomorrow and begin living your life the way you want to live it, what would be different?
Whatever you just thought of – I can support you to create that change in your life. Whether you would have more time for your hobbies, more work/life balance, the courage to make a leap to a new career, or to use more of your leadership abilities at work – I am here to support you in those goals!
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires you to maximize your personal and professional potential.”
I also like this definition from the book, Co-Active Coaching (Whitworth, Kimsey-House, Kimsey-House, and Sandahl):
“Coaching is not about solving problems, although problems will be solved. It is not primarily about improving performance, attaining goals, or achieving results, although all of that will certainly happen in an effective coaching relationship. We believe that coaching is chiefly about discovery, awareness, and choice. It is a way of effectively empowering people to find their own answers, encouraging and supporting them on the path as they continue to make important choices.”
Coaching assumes that our clients are naturally creative, resourceful, and whole. This isn’t about fixing, healing, or helping you. Rather, coaching is about supporting you to unlock your own wisdom and possibilities while exploring new ways of thinking/being so that you can attain your highest potential.
What Outcomes Could I Expect?
First off, there are no guaranteed outcomes with coaching because you own the end of your story – not me. If I could, I’d write the story in the most amazing way possible for you, but you will have to be the one to do the work! For a lot of my clients, they have found that small tweaks (especially to their mindset and mental focus) have transformed the way they work, lead and live. Typically, my clients ask me to work with them on the following:
- Improving work-life balance
- Stress reduction
- Overcoming burnout
- Seeking more purpose and fulfillment out of life
- Bringing life and values into congruence
- Setting necessary boundaries
- Prioritizing self-care
- Finding peace amid the politics and drama of work
- Navigating tricky issues in life (managing a tough boss/coworker, maneuvering office politics etc.)
- and more!

Who Leads the Coaching Session & What Do We Focus On?
If you think about coaching like a sports team, a coach is the guide who helps you as the player develop your skills, keeps you accountable, and reminds you to remember the “end game”. But you are the one playing the game! YOU are living your life – thus, coaching is entirely led by YOU! You set the agenda for what you want to accomplish through coaching (the “end game”), and I come alongside you and support you in discovering, reflecting, and staying focused on your agenda, and ultimately attaining your goals.
I believe you are whole, creative, capable, and resourceful. You have the answers you seek. You are the expert in your life. As such – you do the work here!
But I am the expert in coaching, and as such, I support the work you are endeavoring to do by asking the hard questions, listening deeply to what you say and what you don’t say, stretching you, and at times holding you accountable to your goals. I will push you at times, challenging you to examine patterns of behavior and thought that may be getting in your way.
I care about you living a life you love, are energized by, and feels authentic to you.
My Coaching Process
External Goals:
When you have a specific, tangible set of external outcomes/goals that you are trying to work toward, our coaching will generally follow this process:
Step 1: Creating Our Coaching Relationship:
This involves discussing and determining how we will work together and the specific type of support you need from me in order to attain your goals. This is the foundational work of our coaching relationship where we make our agreements about how we work together to support you in the best way possible.
Step 2: Orienting
This step involves assessing where you are now and where you want to go. We will begin goal setting in this phase of the process and put those goals in the context of where you are now. This process supports you to begin seeing the “journey” to get to where you want to go in more vivid ways. Much like an explorer needs to begin the process of going somewhere by first orienting herself and her map, this powerful process helps to you to get going in the right direction.
Step 3: Goal Clarification:
This step involves clarifying your end goals as well as your process goals. We will determine how you want to see progress toward your goals and discuss potential short- and medium-term goals that are necessary for you to get to where you want to go.
Step 4: Design Actions:
This part of the process will involve taking a look at the specific actions, strategies and tools you will need to employ in order to attain your goals. This part of the process is also where you begin to take action toward those goals which may involve experimenting with new ways of doing things.
Step 5: Creating the Change!:
This is the active part of the process that involves taking the actions you’ve designed, meeting the progress markers that you set for yourself, and utilizing the tools, strategies, and resources you’ve aligned for the process. This step involves ongoing accountability and progress monitoring. Coaching supports all of the work of this phase as well as celebrates the journey toward your goals.
Internal Goals:
When you want to achieve a new way of being from the inside out, we will likely use a different, more wholistic and comprehensive coaching process.
Step 1: Creating Our Coaching Relationship
In order to create an encouraging, supportive space for you to do your work in coaching, we first get to know one another and determine the best way to work together based on supportive relationships from your past, and my strengths as a coach. I think of this as building a foundation for your support.
Step 2: Orienting Internally
Next, we will assess your current level of satisfaction in various aspects of your life, and determine how you want to grow in each of those areas. This may involve strengthening your internal foundation by developing your resilience, looking at how you support and care for yourself, strengthening your internal resources, aligning your energy and time to your values, creating necessary boundaries to support your goals, and addressing any limiting beliefs.
Step 3: Visioning and Goal Setting:
This part of the process involves casting a vision for the life you desire and the ways in which you’d like to grow personally. With this end in mind, you’ll set goals for yourself in the areas of your life/personal development where you’d like to see change.
Step 4: Design Actions:
This phase of the process involves designing actions and summoning strategies, tools, and support resources in order to make the changes you want! This part of the process involves getting into action, experimenting, addressing challenges, and ultimately moving beyond your fears!
Step 5: Ongoing Support in Solidifying Change:
In the final and lasting step of this process, you will experience ongoing support in the coaching relationship to create and live out the life that matches your vision. Living in alignment to your values and desires is powerful but not easy. The coaching relationship supports you in navigating the challenges as well as the exhilarating moments of living a wholehearted, authentic life.
